  This early maturing soya bean’s seeds turn black when fully cooked and are rich in antioxidants. It has a silkier texture, and sweeter flavour than many other varieties. The bushy 60cm tall plants were very productive in our trials, producing pods with two to three seeds each, that are held aloft for easy harvest. The pods keep fresh for ages if briefly blanched and then frozen. Our soybean seeds are authentic from Japanese breeding and are non-GMO. Soybeans are easy to grow, easy to harvest, and nutritious to eat.

  How To Grow, Timing:  Direct sow in late spring, once the soil has warmed up. Cold,
  damp soil can result in rotted seeds and poor germination. Optimal soil temperature: 21-32°C .

  How To Grow, Starting:  Do not pre-soak soya bean seeds. Sow seeds 2-5cm deep, 5-10cm apart, in rows 60cm apart. If the weather is too wet, seeds can be started indoors in pots and carefully transplanted a few weeks later. For a longer harvest,
  plant at 3 week intervals. Germination takes 8-16 days, depending on conditions.

  How To Grow, Growing:  Ideal pH: 5.8-6.2.  Well drained, warm soil is best. Raised beds help with both drainage and warmth. Use 1 cup of balanced organic fertilizer for every 3m of row. Too much nitrogen in fertilizer or manure is often the cause of poor pod set and delayed maturity. If beans flower but do not set pods, the cause can be zinc deficiency. Try spraying the plants with kelp based fertilizer.

  How To Grow, Harvest:  Pick pods that are in the middle of the plant as soon as they start to fatten up. By mid-September, you can pull up the whole plant and pick the remaining pods at your leisure.

  Beans Bush – Velour – West Coast Seeds

  Velour dark purple French filet beans grow slender and straight on upright, bush type plants. 12cm high quality beans have a velvety rich colour that really pops when mixed with yellow and green varieties, or with the magenta coloured Celine. Beans hold well on the open plants for an extended harvest.

  How To Grow, Timing:  Direct sow from mid-spring to early summer. Try to plant during a warm, dry spell. Soil must be warm – if it is not warm enough, the seeds may rot, especially our untreated seeds. Optimal soil temperature for germination: 21-32°C. The seeds should sprout in 8-16 days, depending on conditions.

  How To Grow, Starting:  Sow seeds 2-5cm deep, 5-8cm apart, in rows 45-60cm apart. Thin to at least 15cm apart in each row. If the weather is too wet, beans can also be started in pots indoors and set out carefully a few weeks later. For a continuous harvest, plant at 3 week intervals.

  How To Grow, Growing:  Ideal pH: 6.0-6.5.  Well drained, warm soil in full sun is best. Raised beds help with both drainage and warmth.   Beans Pole – Scarlet Emperor – West Coast Seeds

  The large clusters of beautiful scarlet flowers and rapid, vigorous, sprawling growth make Scarlet Emperor an ideal choice for screens, trellises, and balconies. The long pods are tender and tasty when picked small. If undisturbed, the roots may overwinter and re-grow the following spring in mild winter areas. Even if it doesn’t come back as a perennial, the seeds are large and easy to harvest and dry for future plantings. The seeds are black, streaked with purple. Grow Scarlet Emperor runner beans up a tall, strong trellis, and it will reach 3m or higher by mid-summer.

  Beets – Early Wonder Tall Top – West Coast Seeds

  Early Wonder Tall Top beet seeds beets adapt to all seasons but are especially good in early spring with quick growth in chilly soils. They produce tall, tasty green leaves with red stems and slightly flattened roots with wonderfully sweet flavour. Early Wonder Tall Top beets makes a good variety for general table use. Grow as micro-greens or baby leaf greens for salad mixes, or enjoy the sweet round roots at full size. Be sure to thin the planted row to allow each root the room it needs to grow to full size.

  How to Grow, Timing: Direct sow 4 weeks after last frost to mid-summer. Beets will not produce roots if planted when the soil is too cold. Seeds will germinate in 5-12 days, depending on soil temperature. Optimal soil temperature: 10-26°C.

  How To Grow Seeding: Sow 1cm deep, 5-10cm  apart in rows 30-45cm apart.

  How To Grow Growing: Ideal pH: 6.0-6.8.  For uniformly sized beets, thin carefully to 7-15cm apart when seedlings are 5cm tall. Eat any thinned plants, roots and all. Root size is controlled by spacing and variety.
