  Our heirloom blend combines flowers of deep, rich blue and pearly white that open fresh each morning. Although each individual bloom lasts only one day, new flowers unfurl continuously and buds continue opening over a week in a vase. Seeds like these were carried across the prairies by pioneer families, transplanting a bit of home to far-flung homesteads. Traditionally, these old-fashioned climbing vines with heart shaped leaves and glowing blossom trumpets adorned fences or mailboxes. Grow beautiful living history!

  TO START OUTDOORS

  In late spring, once weather is warm and settled and nights stay above 13°C, plant seeds in a sunny spot in ordinary garden soil 2 to 3 inches apart and 1/2 inch deep. Firm soil over seeds. When seedlings are several inches tall, thin to 6 to 8 inches apart.

  TO START EARLY INDOORS

  Sow indoors 4 or 5 weeks before last expected frost in individual pots of seed starting mix. Cover 1/2 inch deep and keep warm and moist. Provide a strong light source until seedlings are ready to plant outdoors. Plant out only when nights reach 13°C. Transplant seedlings 6 to 8 inches apart, taking care to avoid disturbing roots as much as possible.

  GROWING NOTES

  Morning glory seeds have a very hard outer shell. To improve and significantly hasten their germination rate, it is worth the extra effort to use a nail clipper and nick each one just enough to break the seed shell so soil moisture can enter more easily. Alternatively, you can rough these hard-skinned seeds with a file. At planting time, erect well-anchored supports at least 8 feet tall. Morning glories bloom abundantly beginning in mid to late summer once days begin to shorten.

  No romantic evening garden would be complete without the luminous, iridescent huge trumpets of white Moonflower, the fragrant Southern belle of climbing vines. These vigorous vines with their large, bright green heart shaped leaves make a dense canopy that will cloak a fence or sturdy trellis. At dusk, the opalescent buds unfurl in slow motion while you watch, releasing their haunting perfume as they swirl and flare wide open to show delicate throats creased with a creamy star.

  These charming variegated nasturtiums have lovely lily pad leaves whose cream and green striped markings make a wonderful color accent in the garden. The highly ornamental foliage is covered with pert, spurred flowers in bright gold, cheery orange, rich mahogany and salmon. Softly mounding, compact Alaska is an especially striking edging for flowerbeds or borders to contrast with green leaved plants. An attractive choice for showy patio containers, hanging baskets and window boxes.

  EASY TO START OUTDOORS

  Sow seeds in spring once all danger of frost is over in full sun (or part shade in hot climates). Nasturtiums need no added fertilizer in most soils. Poke seeds into well-worked soil about 1 inch deep and 3 to 4 inches apart. Press soil firmly over the seeds and keep moist. When seedlings are large enough to handle, thin to 10 inches apart as mounding plants need ample room.

   

  TO START EARLY INDOORS

  Sow 2 seeds each in individual 4 inch pots of well-drained seed starting mix 3 weeks before last expected frost date. Cover 1 inch deep. Provide a strong light source. When seedlings have several sets of leaves pinch out the weaker seedling, leaving 1 per pot. When night temperatures reach 50ºF (10ºC), gradually acclimate to outdoors. Transplant seedlings into the garden 10 inches apart in full sun.

  These old-fashioned nasturtiums with handsome variegated leaves are easy to grow in any well-drained soil.   Sunflower Pollinator – Lemon Queen – Renee’s Garden

  Heirloom Lemon Queen is particularly attractive to pollinating bees and is often planted by researchers tracking honeybee populations. These free flowering sunflowers have branching clusters of 4-6 inch flowers with pure lemon-yellow pointed petals and chocolate centers. Plants grow 5-9 feet tall and mature early.

  Pollinators of all sorts are drawn to Lemon Queen’s nectar and pollen, the blossoms make a lovely cut flower for bouquets, and birds love the ripened seeds in fall.

  EASIEST TO DIRECTLY PLANT OUTDOORS

  Plant in full sun in good garden soil only when weather is warm and settled, all danger of frost is past and both days and nights are evenly in the 10°C range. Poke individual seeds into well-worked soil about 1/2 in. deep, 4 to 5 in. apart. Press the soil firmly over the seeds and keep the seedbed evenly moist until seedlings emerge in 8 to 10 days.

  Important: when the seedlings are well-established, carefully thin them to a final spacing of 1 foot apart; this way they will have enough room to develop sturdy stalks that won’t blow over and big clusters of flowers. Any extra seedlings you remove can be transplanted elsewhere in the garden or potted up and given to friends.

  GROWING NOTES

  Growing these colorful sunflowers for pollinators and bouquets is both easy and rewarding. Make several sowings several weeks apart and you’ll have a succession of flowers in full bloom. Keep soil moist and well weeded and protect very young seedlings from birds with bird netting held tautly above the seedbed with supports, or use plastic berry baskets, removing baskets before plants get crowded.
